Dry like toast

Have you seen "My Big fat Greek Wedding"? Think "Dry like toast" - this session could have used some jam.

I was so jazzed looking at the title, reading the description. I was all prepared for info. on early learning, brain development, good research facts. They event had lemon bars as a snack - I thought it was a sign!

“Community of practice” – Jason pointed out the new museum term of the day we should learn - community of practice. We are a community of practice.

This entire presentation was actually focused on research. The point they were all trying to make was - we need to conduct research in our exhibits - to create, to ensure they are working properly, and for the future. we can either conduct our own research or partner with someone to do research.

The coolest thing we heard about - I'm sure we'll all blog about it - one research study on the Ultimate Block Party. World’s largest block party in central park, where there were fun exhibits and all kinds of researchers ( NSF – researchers, museums). Over 60,000 people last October at Central Park 2010. 70% from difderent burroughs, different ethnicities, backgrounds. Activities included: Construction play, make-believe, technology, pretend play. Psychology, cognitive research taking place. Families seeing that play was important.

feel free to join the next one - June 5th – Toronto, October – Baltimore – All cultural community orgraniztions in area banding together. 75 cities asking for block party. Lots of publicity.

Good book recommended -
“Childhood wonders” by national geographic ideas for activities at home with kids. 21st century skills in book. Workshops on how to use book with urban families. Simple project and idea.

Also - we got to hear about the mammoth exhibit .... again.

Interesting point to remember - research discovered parents will explain science concepts to both girls and boys equally - when the science theme is "girl friendly."

I just think with a little jam it could have been jazzed up.
